Cavite News and What's Latest...
Intel Philippines Inc. is providing livelihood training for its employees as it prepares to shut down its factory in Cavite this June.
The company has offered its entire staff of 1,800 employees a variety of skills training, which includes entrepreneurship, culinary arts, digital photography, and computer training and troubleshooting. The company said all workers will be paid during the 90-day training.
"Importante na matuto tayo magnegosyo, matuto tayo kung paano gumawa ng mga investments so iyon ang mindset na ipapamahagi sa mga kapwa empleyado sa Intel (It's important to learn how to do business, how to make investments. So that's the mindset we're instilling on our fellow Intel employees)," said Arlita Naraga, Intel Vice President for Corporate Communications.
Two months ago, Intel announced the closure of its manufacturing plant in General Trias, Cavite as part of the company's efforts to cut costs in its global manufacturing network. The company has offered separation packages to its workers which would help them start their own businesses.
Some of Intel's employees have expressed interest in starting their own businesses related to their previous jobs once the Cavite plant closes. For instance, preventive maintenance specialist Rogel Serotico said he is planning to put up a computer shop, while his co-worker Rona Flandes said she is considering setting up an internet cafe.
Others, however, are thinking of exiting the electronics industry altogether by venturing into the food business: "Try namin ito sa bahay. Pag okay, bi-business namin (We'll try it at home first. When all goes well, we'll start a business."
Intel's workforce is only a fraction of over 32,000 workers located in the Calabarzon area who have lost their jobs due to the global economic crisis. In view of this, the Labor department said it is doing its best to help the region.
"Iyong walang inclination na magtrabaho muli, pwede silang mamili. Bibigyan sila ng livelihood project at bibigyan ng puhunan pag na-approve (Those who don't wnat to work again have a choice. We can provide them livelihood projects, and we'll give them capital if it is approved," said Atty. Ricardo Martinez of the Labor Department in Calabarzon.
